Swedish dental care (tandvård) is not part of the same system as regular healthcare. Different rules, different subsidies, different providers. Understanding this early saves confusion later.

Children — free until 23

If you're under 23 and have a personnummer, you get free dental care from a public clinic (Folktandvården) or a participating private clinic. Automatic; no paperwork needed.

Adults — the högkostnadsskydd

From 24 onward you pay yourself, but there's a subsidy system called tandvårdsstödet:

  • Allmänt tandvårdsbidrag: 300–600 SEK per year that you can put toward check-ups (varies by age).
  • High-cost protection: Once you spend over 3 000 SEK in a year, the state subsidizes 50% of costs up to 15 000 SEK, and 85% above that.

Bills and the subsidy are handled through Försäkringskassan in the background — you don't fill out forms, the clinic reports it.

Public vs private dental

Folktandvården is the regional public dental service. Prices are set by the region and tend to be somewhat lower than private.

Private clinics compete on service, opening hours, and technology. Price differences are typically modest — 10–30% higher than public, not 2–3×.

A routine check-up costs roughly 900–1 500 SEK before subsidy. A filling: 1 200–2 800 SEK. An implant: 30 000–45 000 SEK complete.

Dental insurance

Dental insurance is separate from health insurance. Employers don't usually offer it. You can buy it privately (Trygg-Hansa, If, Länsförsäkringar, Hedvig), typically 300–800 SEK per month. It makes sense if you expect large dental costs (implants, orthodontics); less so if you just want check-ups.

Folktandvården Frisktandvård is a subscription model: you pay a fixed monthly fee (~100–300 SEK depending on your dental state) and routine care is included. Good if you want predictability without insurance.

Finding a dentist

You can pick freely — no need to register. Most people pick a clinic near home or work. Folktandvården has drop-in clinics in larger cities. Private clinics often have shorter waits and longer opening hours.
